360 Screenings is back just in time for Valentine’s Day with their newest secret screening – LOVE. If you haven’t heard of Ned Loach and Robert Gontier’s unique company, you’re missing out. 360 Screenings takes two different mediums – films and theatre – and merges them together to create a fascinating immersive theatre experience that promises to take guests ‘inside the film’.
The co-founders, who are also a real life couple, started 360 Screenings in 2012 and have been delighting Toronto audiences ever since. They’ve featured films such as Ghost, Fight Club, Amelie (last year’s Valentine’s screening) and their Halloween events are always one of the hottest tickets in town.
One of the coolest things they have going for them is the element of surprise, as both the film and the location of the screening are kept secret from people buying tickets. The location is revealed 24 hours prior the event, and when guests arrive there are actors on site to recreate famous scenes from the evening’s film. After being immersed into the film, guests are treated to a private viewing of the movie.
I’ve been a champion of 360 Screenings since my first feature interview with them in 2012. They’re doing exciting and creative work and engaging Torontonians who are fans of film, theatre and (like me) those who love both.
Given that the Valentine’s Day screening is fast approaching, I had a quick conversation with Ned about what it’s like to work with your partner, and about his feelings on ‘LOVE’:
What is the WORST thing about working with your significant other?
I keep coming back to this question, but I truly cannot find an answer. If I had to find one thing it would be that we both don’t get to experience the events as guests – particularly now when we are planning a LOVE themed screening.
Being able to work with my best friend. Seriously, it’s such a wonderful thing, especially when we’re brainstorming ideas with our Industrial Designer Andy Miller. It’s a hilarious crazy session where all ideas are possible. The sky is the limit with our screenings.
When 360 Screenings was coming to fruition, was there ever a fleeting moment where you thought ‘do I REALLY want to spend all my time with this person’?
Never! If there was ever someone I wanted to embark on this wild journey with, it would be Robbie. I trust his suggestions and ideas 100%, and that’s what makes this professional partnership and personal marriage so successful.
In your household, what’s the best way to settle an argument? Does it work at the office as well?
What do you consider to be one of the most taboo or ‘button-pushing’ issues when it comes to relationships?
I would have to say “listening.” So often in relationships the communication isn’t open, and the relationship suffers as a result. It is so important to listen.
Valentine’s Day. Good? Bad? Necessary Evil? And how will you two be spending it?
Last year we spent Valentine’s Day at our Amelie screening (which was a wonderful way to spend it!), but this year we’re excited to actually spend it together. It will be quiet, and most likely over a candle lit dinner. So very good!
Let’s talk about the 360 Screenings LOVE event. I know better than to ask for hints, but given that it’s around ‘V-Day’
I would like to know if it can appeal to both the romantics and the cynics – and if so, how?
It will appeal to everyone. There’s so much to do and see that you needn’t be a hopeless romantic to be swept up in the magic of our love.
Finally, if you could give one piece of advice to couples who also work together, what would it be?
Again – it would be to listen. ESPECIALLY when working together.
There are still a few tickets left to the 360 Screenings LOVE event (this Friday and Saturday). To learn more or to purchase tickets, please visit their official website here: http://360screenings.com/
