It’s an exciting day for theatre lovers in Canada as Mirvish announced their 2016-2017 subscription series and confirmed rumours that homegrown musical COME FROM AWAY would play Toronto prior to heading to Broadway in 2017. The show, developed at Sheridan College as part of the Canadian Musical Theatre Program and written by Irene Carl Sankoff and David Hein (My Mother’s Lesbian Jewish Wiccan Wedding), has been a massive hit in both San Diego and Seattle and is poised to make quite a splash when it heads to the Great White Way.
The show tackles a sensitive topic (the tragedy of 9/11) with a uniquely Canadian twist by focusing on the planes that were grounded in Gander, Newfoundland on the day of the attacks. With original music that features incredibly catchy and poignant tunes and a story line that speaks to the nature of what it means to be a citizen of the world, the show is special in its ability to unite people from all walks of life. I had the pleasure of watching it evolve through Theatre Sheridan and could not be happier to see it bound for Broadway.
The new season is a big one for musicals, featuring four additional shows that fall into my favourite category. There are two entries from the West End (THE BODYGUARD and MRS HENDERSON PRESENTS) and an Australian addition in Baz Luhrmann directed STRICTLY BALLROOM: THE MUSICAL. Rounding them out is the touring production of BEAUTIFUL: THE CAROLE KING MUSICAL which is currently playing on Broadway with Canadian Chilina Kennedy in the title role and Sheridan alum Scott J Campbell as Gerry Goffin.
Audiences will no doubt be excited by the non-musical entries in the season, including a new work by Quebec troup ‘Les 7 doigts de la main’ entitled CUISINE AND CONFESSIONS and Peter Morgan’s THE AUDIENCE which will be both a Canadian premiere and a co-production with the Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre.
The Off-Mirvish season also has exciting offerings including the new Canadian play BUTCHER by Nicholas Billion, which has success at Alberta Theatre Projects in 2014 where it had its premiere. From Belgium comes FIGHT NIGHT, and finally Studio 180 Theatre will join forces with Mirvish to present MY NIGHT WITH REG.
There are four bonus shows that are not a part of the subscriptions series, including a return presentation of BOOK OF MORMON, a new production of FOREVER PLAID (with Starvox Entertainment), THE ILLUSIONISTS and CABARET.
