This will mark the show’s fourth visit to Toronto – and it’s always a hot ticket. I still vividly remember when Shoshana Bean and Megan Hilty performed the roles here to sold out audiences despite some wicked winter weather.
Our fine city was also where the touring company of Wicked played it’s first engagement in 2005, so as Producer David Stone said in an interview with The Star, ‘we’ve always thought of Toronto as home since then.’
Wicked returning brings the tally of big Broadway musicals headed Toronto’s way via Mirvish up to four – and the 2014-2015 has yet to be announced.
Starting in April, another Toronto favourite returns for a limited engagement when The Lion King roars back into The Princess of Wales where it will play through June. Following that, last Spring’s juggernaut The Book of Mormon will return to to The Princess in September. The Book of Mormon is still one of the hottest tickets on Broadway and it’s Toronto engagement was no exception – our city sure did embrace those Mormons!
Finally, in 2015 Toronto will see a premiere engagement of the Disney hit musical Newsies, adapted from the Christian Bale film of the same name. The show has proven a gem on Broadway, achieving that perfect balance of delighting both cult fans of the movie and musical lovers who are hearing Jack Kelly’s story for the first time. Plus it’s got a gaggle of cute, singing and dancing newsboys – how can you go wrong?
With the Mirvish 2014-2015 still be announced, I’m curious to know what shows are on your wish list? What would you like to see come back to the city? Or what new shows are you dying to see? Comment below or tweet me at @broadwaybabyto!
